In the story Boomtown, Amanda made more money selling pies than her father did mining for gold. She then convinced other people to start businesses and helped turn her boring town into a boom town. If you moved to Amanda’s town, what business would you start? Write a topic sentence telling what your business would be. (Think about what you are good and and what you like to do. Think about what the town needed.) Then write three sentences giving details about how and why you would start that business. Finally, don’t forget to wrap it up with a closing sentence!

May 1st – My first day of eating fish. Really, it’s all I usually eat.
May 8th – I started swimming away from plankton. You can’t really see plankton because they are really little.
June 1st – Polar bear swam by with swordfish. We teamed up to kill a dolphin. P.S. It was tasty!
June 3rd – I ate my second dolphin.
July 7th – I made friends with swordfish in school.
July 8th I ate a tire for the first time.
July 18th – I found a potato.
July 28th – I choked on my potato.
October 1st – I lost my diary for a long, long, long, long, time and now I found it. Thank goodness!
November 2nd – I hurled. Then the water turned greenish brownish.
November 8th – I coughed up a dolphin. Ah, man!
December 1st – I went to the shark museum. How could you do this to my species? You cruel people! You should be ashamed of yourselves.
May 1st – I lost my diary again, so now I’m right back where I started.

We are studying crayfish as part of our “Structures of Life” unit in science.
We got to spend a few days observing the crayfish. They were not very healthy. They all died. It was sad. Mrs. D’s class had crayfish and they all died too. The school office called and to report the problem and they told them that schools all around the country had called to say their crayfish died. It was a bad year for crayfish.
